Deck boats feature spacious interior layouts, plenty of seating, and strong performance. It’s easy to see why they have become so popular with boating families. But standing out in the highly competitive market is no easy task. Starcraft makes its play for success with its SV Series jet boats, led by the flagship Starcraft SV Jet J9 SS.
Stretching 19 feet, 4 inches overall with a 7-foot, 11-inch beam, the J9 SS features propeller-free Rotax jet propulsion, an open cockpit, and a stable Dihedral-Vee hull. Its versatile seating arrangement includes a full-width sundeck and flexible portside chaise configurations, creating an open-air feel that’s made for fun in the sun.
Rotax Engine Options
Powered by a Rotax jet pump rather than a conventional outboard or sterndrive, the Starcraft SV Jet J9 SS has no external propeller. That provides some peace of mind for families who will have young children swimming around the boat or enjoying watersports. The internal jet pump also allows the boat to operate in relatively shallow water without striking an unseen rock with a propeller.
When it’s time to power up and go, the Rotax engine, available in 170, 200, or 300 hp—our review boat featured the latter—delivers brisk acceleration and nimble handling. It can even perform personal-watercraft-style maneuvers such as 360-degree spins.
Starcraft knows power is nothing without control. That’s why the Rotax system is available with speed-control settings that allow drivers to toggle easily between Ski, Cruise Control, Eco, and Docking modes.
Starcraft SV Jet J9 SS Hull
Starcraft makes the most of this propulsion platform by pairing it with its proven SV Series deck boat hull. The Dihedral-Vee design cuts cleanly through chop while helping to reduce hull motion and spray. It creates a smoother ride for everyone aboard.
Decked out in its Bermuda color scheme with blue, pink, and grey SeaDek foam decking throughout, our review Starcraft J9 SS had no trouble attracting attention. But there’s more to this boat than its energetic finish.
With the Rotax engine housed deep inside the hull, the Starcraft SV Jet J9 SS benefits from a low center of gravity. The resulting ride is noticeably different from that of Starcraft’s similar but outboard-powered SVX Series deck boats. The feel is even softer running through chop or crossing other boats’ wakes.
Befitting its sporty appearance, the Starcraft J9 SS hugs the water much like a classic roadster hugs the road. It keeps its composure when the surface gets lumpy or the driver starts having extra fun behind the wheel. Best of all, the internal propulsion system delivers decent fuel economy and doesn’t eat up interior storage space.
Swim Platform and Transom
To my eye, the Starcraft SV Jet J9 SS feels like a larger boat than its specs indicate. Much of that impression comes from its wide-open layout, which makes excellent use of the available space.
Most passengers will board from the stern swim platform, which on our review boat was finished with custom SeaDek soft-touch decking. The striking, multilevel design provides comfortable, sure footing even with wet feet. Combined with the aft-facing, full-width bench seat, it gives the stern a nicely finished appearance.
A four-step, retractable stainless steel boarding ladder at the starboard end of the platform makes reboarding after a swim easy. With no exposed propeller, there’s also less hardware to worry about when moving around the stern.
That full-beam transom seat doubles as a sunpad and abuts a forward-facing bench seat located just inside the cockpit, allowing passengers to sit and sunbathe at the same time. That’s a useful feature on a boat of this size. Once again, the J9 SS feels larger than its 19-foot length would suggest.
Cockpit and Helm
Moving forward, the cockpit’s forward-facing bench extends nearly across the beam, leaving enough room to starboard for the boarding steps.
Opposite the bench is a portside single lounge seat, while the driver’s helm bucket swivels to face aft, creating an inviting space for conversation. Multiple drink holders ensure a cold beverage is never far away.
The helm console is compact and neatly laid out. A sporty chrome-on-black steering wheel features padded inserts for added comfort. Primary instrumentation sits in a small cluster at the top of the dash, flanked by the Wet Sounds stereo control head on the left and a row of waterproof, backlit switches on the right. Passengers can control everything from navigation, docking, and courtesy lights to the bilge pump from here.
A convenient drink holder and a stereo speaker are mounted in the gunwale. A small but functional removable acrylic windscreen provides useful protection from the slipstream.

Up front, twin lounge seats provide an ideal place to put your feet up. More drink holders and stereo speakers, along with well-placed grab handles, make this a space likely to become a favorite with kids of all ages.
Large storage compartments beneath the lounge seats swallow up a surprising amount of gear.
Far forward, the Starcraft J9 SS features a bow swim platform, offering another option for the inevitable afternoon cannonball competition. On our review boat, the front deck was fitted with full SeaDek decking for added comfort and secure footing.

With its open layout and flexible seating, the Starcraft SV Jet J9 SS provides plenty of options for accommodating family and friends. Bring everyone along for a day on the water. Or don’t and enjoy the boat yourself. Add the lively performance and handling of Rotax jet propulsion, and Starcraft has created a deck boat that delivers excitement that its family-friendly layout might not suggest.
Passengers have plenty of places to stretch out, and abundant storage keeps the inevitable collection of towels, toys, coolers, and watersports gear safely out of sight. But what really sets the J9 SS apart is that Starcraft hasn’t sacrificed fun in the pursuit of family practicality. The Rotax jet drive gives this deck boat an eagerness and agility that belies its size. The Dihedral-Vee hull keeps the ride composed when conditions get choppy. It’s equally happy cruising with the family, pulling, a rider or letting the driver have a little fun.
That combination makes the Starcraft SV Jet J9 SS a candidate for buyers who want the space and versatility of a deck boat but don’t want to give up the excitement of a jet. In a segment where practicality can sometimes come at the expense of personality, the J9 SS manages to deliver both.
