The Azimut Magellano 30M—Trenta Metri—is the new flagship of the builder’s Magellano line. At just under 98 feet long, it features five staterooms, with the primary suite on the main deck and four guest rooms belowdecks. It can also accommodate five crewmembers in three cabins located in the bow section of the lower level just forward of the galley.

Every stateroom includes an en suite head—that is a standout feature—and counting the day head, there are a total of nine on board. Azimut used marble extensively throughout the heads and staterooms to add to the luxe ambiance. Side doors to the galley, pantry, and bridge allow crewmembers to attend to guests discretely.

Stretching nearly 98 feet long, the 30-meter Magellano superyacht has a 23-foot, 2-inch beam.

Azimut Magellano 30M Styling

This largest Magellano is pure Italian, with a modern take on design elements. Ken Freivokh handled the exterior architecture, and Vincenzo De Cotiis took care of the interior design. An overriding theme on the Azimut Magellano 30M is abundant ambient light. You will find no cave-like interior living spaces. Even the galley and crew quarters bring in plenty of outside light, and all of the staterooms boast a VIP view.

I found an interesting design element in the windows. Many of them are round or oval, which channels an earlier era of yachting. The plumb bow and imposing hull could look boxy, but the Freivokh design offsets that in a number of ways. One is the abundance of differently shaped windows. Another is the horizontal slats on the main deck and just in front of the swim platform. A third is the addition of hull stripes along its length. They all add to the yacht’s visual appeal.

Builders often comingle the upper deck helm station and lounge, but Azimut uses a door to separate the two. Guests and the captain can enjoy privacy when they desire it. The skipper has an eagle-eye view from the tall bridge, and a trio of Simrad multifunction displays keeps them informed.

When it’s time to dock, the captain can step onto the side deck and flip open a port or starboard wing station that gives them a tremendous view of the entire length of the boat. That makes their job far easier than having to rely only on a camera view or radio chatter from the bosun.

Aft Deck

The center section of the large swim platform lowers to put lounging guests near the waterline. It also serves as a tool to launch and retrieve a tender or a personal watercraft—they both fit in the trunk—and replaces a space-robbing on-deck crane and cradles.

From the swim platform, port and starboard stairways lead to the main deck.

Azimut Magellano 30M Main Deck

The aft portion of the Azimut Magellano 30M main deck is an al fresco infinity terrace that’s entirely protected by an overhead hardtop. Automatic sliding glass doors provide entry into the salon, and the view inside is spectacular. The salon maximizes its panoramic view with sole-to-ceiling windows and low-profile furniture.

The dining area is perfect for breakfast and lunch. Hidden storage behind wall panels keeps the look clean. Furniture throughout the yacht channels a minimalist vibe, with Italian curves and a focus on comfort.

Staterooms

Two VIP suites are positioned aft on the lower deck and feature queen-size beds. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors make the spaces feel even larger, and occupants enjoy plenty of storage. Two more guest cabins reside amidships. On our evaluation boat, both cabins had a pair of single beds that can be pushed together, which is a plus for charter flexibility.

The primary cabin is the only living quarters on the main deck, which gives the owner or primary charter client privacy at night. Its entrance hallway is impressive. Picture Italian marble countertops with storage beneath and round portholes, opposite a wall of mirrors that conceals the closets. It is an ideal place to dress for the captain’s dinner. It also leaves the cabin uncluttered and expansive, spanning beam to beam and flanked by twin walls of windows, giving occupants an unparalleled ocean view.

The primary head is huge, which one might expect aboard a superyacht, with twin sink fixtures that share a single marble basin. For added quiet at night, a 100 kW lithium-ion battery bank allows owners to shut off the generator for up to eight hours while in hotel mode.

Azimut Magellano 30M Upper Deck

Sunbathers who might lament the main deck’s lack of direct light will be mollified by stepping to the upper deck. There, large sun lounges occupy space fore and aft. Our evaluation boat featured an optional hot tub on the bow lounge. Ample chaise lounge seating on this windiest deck makes catching rays a comfortable experience. If the sun’s rays become too much, deploy the Mediterranean shade that features carbon fiber poles.

The rear deck is the entertainment heart and soul of this yacht. Sliding doors allow the intimate inside salon to be joined with the rear deck. A dining area for 12 is in the open-air section but is still well protected from the elements. An American bar is centrally located to serve revelers on the aft sun deck or those protected by the hardtop.

Propulsion and Performance

A pair of 12-cylinder MAN diesels powers the Magellano 30M. Buyers can choose either a 1,550 hp configuration or a 1,900 hp high-output version. The standard 3,100 hp duo pushes the hull to a top speed of about 20 knots, while the 3,800 hp pair reaches a top speed of 25 knots. The running gear is a shaft-line configuration that allows it to swing larger propellers than pod drives, giving it a leg-up in rough water.

The Dual-Mode hull design is a collaboration between P.L. Ausonio Naval Architecture and the Azimut team. It’s a semi-planing design with double chines to maximize fuel economy, whether at displacement speeds or when running faster. At 12 knots, the engines consume 16 gallons of diesel per hour. That results in a range of 1,200 nautical miles, which makes nonstop runs from Palm Beach to South America or to Martha’s Vineyard possible.

The hull uses a variable-deadrise configuration to minimize pounding, with a sharp 45-degree deadrise at the bow that gradually flattens to 30 degrees amidship. Instead of gyrostabilizers, the 30M relies on Humphree active fin stabilizers that work at rest or while underway.

The Bottom Line

Azimut was founded by the Vitelli family in 1969 and in 1985 acquired Benetti, which has been building yachts since 1865. Together, they form the largest yacht-building company in the world.
