As riders progress beyond the basics of wakeboarding, their expectations of a wakeboard change. Advanced riders don’t focus on simply standing up, crossing the wake, or landing their first jumps. They are chasing height, distance, consistency, and precision. And they are pushing themselves to perform more technical tricks that require exacting control and timing. For these riders, equipment is no longer about forgiveness; it’s about performance tuning. That’s where advanced wakeboards enter the picture.

An advanced wakeboard setup can be broken down into three critical components: wakeboard, fins, and bindings. Each plays a specific role in how the board accelerates, holds an edge, loads line tension, releases off the wake, and reconnects with the water on landings.

All of the major wakeboard manufacturers—including Connelly, Hyperlite, Liquid Force, O’Brien, and Ronix—offer high-performance advanced wakeboards specifically designed for advanced riders.

When choosing a wakeboard setup for an advanced rider, keep in mind the three key areas to consider:

  1. The wakeboard
  2. The fins
  3. The bindings

Boards for Cable Parks vs. Behind the Boat

All wakeboards look similar at a distance, but boards designed for advanced riders and those intended for beginner or intermediate riders feature significant differences.

You first need to understand that there are two primary types of wakeboards: boards made for cable parks and boards made for riding behind a boat. Cable park boards are designed for riders who use rails, ramps, and other features—similar to skateboarding—to perform tricks. These boards are built to withstand repeated impacts from obstacles and typically feature grind bases and minimal fins. They are not designed specifically for generating pop off a boat’s wake.

Advanced wakeboards designed for riding behind a wake boat are engineered for riders who want maximum performance when launching off the boat’s wake. These boards typically range in price from approximately $600 to $1,100. They include removable fins but do not include bindings. Riders at this level require customization, which is why bindings are sold separately.

Advanced Wakeboards: Designed for Maximum Performance

Beginner and intermediate-level wakeboards are built for stability and forgiveness. They help riders learn how to edge, cross the wake, and land basic tricks. Advanced wakeboards, by contrast, are designed to hold a powerful edge and accelerate aggressively into the wake, two actions that produce significantly more height and distance in the air.

Increased airtime allows advanced riders to accomplish a couple of things. First, they can perform inverts such as back rolls, tantrums, and flips with greater control and style. Second, they can add spins and grabs that increase both difficulty and visual impact. Extended airtime ensures that riders can combine rotations, add grabs to inverts, and execute more complex trick variations.

At the professional level, riders are generating so much airtime that double inverts such as tantrums and back rolls are becoming increasingly common. They are accomplishing spins such as 720s, 900s, and even 1080s.

To help riders achieve this level of performance, advanced wakeboards must be strong, responsive, and, most importantly, lightweight. Advanced boards can weigh a pound or more less than beginner boards. That doesn’t sound like much, but when you are performing high-flying tricks, every ounce matters.

To create this combination of strength and reduced weight, manufacturers use and strategically place high-tech materials such as carbon fiber and graphite within the board’s construction. These materials, along with more complex manufacturing processes, explain why advanced wakeboards are more expensive than beginner or intermediate models.

What Type of Airtime Do You Want?

All advanced riders want more time in the air. The more, the better, but not all airtime is the same. Once a rider understands edge control and line tension when jumping the boat’s wake and becomes comfortable performing inverts and spins, a question arises. What type of airtime do they prefer?

Advanced riders develop distinct riding styles. Some riders prefer explosive vertical pop. Others favor longer, more floaty jumps that carry them far into the flats. Many want a balance of both. For this reason, you should think of advanced wakeboards as a specialized subcategory within wakeboards.

Rockers for Airtime

Manufacturers design boards with specific features to achieve these different riding characteristics. Advanced wakeboards with a three-stage rocker (the curvature of the board) feature a flatter spot under the bindings to help deliver a more abrupt, vertical pop from the boat’s wake. Boards with a continuous rocker create smoother acceleration and carry more speed through the wake, resulting in longer-distance jumps. Hybrid rocker designs blend elements of both to provide a balance of vertical lift and distance.

Edge Design for Airtime

Edge design also plays a significant role. Boards designed for vertical pop typically feature sharper, more aggressive edges that grip the water and build strong line tension. Wakeboards designed for longer, more drawn-out jumps often use a slightly more rounded edge, allowing smoother release and less drag. Hybrid wakeboards combine sharp and rounded edge characteristics to deliver a mix of lift and distance.

Width for Airtime

Board width is another factor. Wakeboards designed for vertical lift are often slightly wider, creating more surface area for lift off the wake. Boards designed for longer jumps into the flats tend to be narrower, which reduces drag. Less drag means more speed, and more speed into the wake translates to greater distance.

Advanced wakeboards are sold in a variety of sizes to fit adults and older teens, along with sizes designed for younger teens and pre-teen riders.

Fine-Tuning Performance with Fins for Advanced Wakeboards

Advanced wakeboards come with removable fins made from materials such as fiberglass, nylon-reinforced composite, and polycarbonate for strength and durability. These fins give advanced riders the ability to fine-tune how a board rides.

Manufacturers offer a variety of fin depths, lengths, and shapes that allow riders to customize the feel of their board. Some riders prefer a slightly looser ride, but others demand a board that tracks precisely and holds a powerful edge.

Bindings Are the Critical Link Between Rider and Board

Choosing the right board is only part of the equation. Bindings are a critical component of advanced wakeboards and their setup; they should never be an afterthought.

In the early days of wakeboarding in the late 1980s, bindings for both professionals and beginners were simple sandal-style designs with minimal heel support. They were easy to put on but offered a sloppy fit and provided very little control of the board.

Today’s bindings have evolved dramatically. In fact, today’s beginner riders use bindings that are superior to what professionals used during the sport’s early years. Binding selection is extensive and highly specialized for advanced riders because bindings are the direct connection between a rider’s feet and the wakeboard.

Modern wakeboard bindings are boot-style across all levels. They provide increased comfort, support, and control. However, important differences still exist between bindings designed for beginner or intermediate riders and those intended for advanced riders.

Beginner and intermediate riders often use open-toe bindings, which allow multiple foot sizes to share the same boot. While convenient, this design sacrifices the precision fit that advanced riders need.

Bindings for Advanced Wakeboards

Advanced riders demand closed-toe boot bindings because they offer the highest level of comfort, responsiveness, and control. At this level, bindings should fit the rider precisely and be used exclusively by that rider, which is why advanced boot bindings are designed for specific foot sizes. This ensures a precise fit and allows liners and insoles to mold to the rider’s feet over time, providing consistent performance.

Advanced boot bindings provide ample ankle and foot support and minimize overall weight—an important benefit for advanced riders. They are also designed to help soften landings from high-impact tricks.

To provide even more customization, these bindings feature advanced tightening systems, such as cinch-style laces that allow riders to fine-tune the fit around their foot, ankle, and shin. Many bindings use separate tightening zones to dial in support exactly where it’s needed.

Most boot bindings on advanced wakeboards feature a boot mounted to a plate that attaches directly to the board. Hyperlite offers an alternate option for advanced riders with its System Bindings. This system, similar to snowboarding, consists of a binding mounted to the board and a removable boot that locks into the binding. This approach provides another level of customization and control for advanced riders.

Boot bindings for advanced riders typically range in price from $350 to $725 per pair. Manufacturers offer a wide variety of styles and sizes for adult, teen, and younger advanced riders.

Putting It All Together

Advanced riders need advanced wakeboards because equipment is about refinement. The right wakeboard, fins, and bindings work together, along with the boat and driver, to match a rider’s style, maximize their airtime, and deliver consistency and control at the highest level. Understanding how design features influence pop, distance, speed, and responsiveness enables advanced riders to make informed decisions and ultimately ride at their full potential.
