“Hope for the best and prepare for the worst” is a good mindset every time you launch your boat. Lots of times it’s smooth sailing: blue skies, calm waters, and a boat that runs like a dream. Or it’s dark and stormy, and your boat won’t stop breaking. Could be the motor or the electrical system, or maybe it just won’t steer straight. There’s a chance you could have prevented all of these issues with a thorough review and some pre-launch basics.
Boaters should have a pre-launch checklist for their boat. Let us help you add seven things you must check, along with why it matters. We are going to use a 25-foot outboard-powered boat as an example.
Make sure your outboard is ready to operate under load. It is essential. Check the engine oil level (for four-stroke engines), confirm the oil quality, inspect the cowling interior for leaks, and verify the prop spins free. Look for fishing line or other stringy impediments. The fuel bulb should be firm, the engine should start smoothly, and the cooling system must show a strong telltale stream.
An engine failure offshore is just plain bad. It leaves you adrift in the wind and waves, potentially near hazards. Outboards are dependable when you maintain them properly, but simple issues such as low oil can cause them to overheat or shut down.
Fuel is a boat’s lifeblood, and boat operators should inspect the entire fuel system from tank to engine. Make sure the tank is filled for the planned distance—don’t forget the reserve—check fuel hoses for cracks or brittleness, tighten hose clamps, inspect the primer bulb, and do a smell test. No fuel odors? Great. Start the engine.
Fuel contamination—particularly water in the fuel—is a major cause of engine failure. A blocked vent, an air leak, or a degraded fuel line can starve the engine or cause surging. A few minutes of inspection as part of your pre-launch basics can prevent the kind of mechanical or safety emergency that leaves a boat disabled.
A 25-footer typically relies on one or two batteries: one for engine cranking and one for house loads such as pumps, electronics, and lighting. As part of your pre-launch basics, check the battery charge levels. Ensure the switches are set properly (both “on” or “1+2,” depending on the configuration). Verify that the terminals are tight and free of corrosion. Make sure essential electronics—VHF radio, GPS/chartplotter, navigation lights, and bilge pumps—power up normally.
Electrical problems occur all of the time. A weak battery may start the engine at the ramp but fail later, leaving no power for communication or navigation. Faulty wiring or loose terminals can disable bilge pumps. Because today’s boats depend heavily on electronics for safety, a robust and well-running electrical system protects the boat and everyone aboard.
The bilge is the lowest part of the hull where water naturally collects. Even a small amount of water can indicate something is leaking, and you should look for that while running down your checklist of pre-launch basics. Could be through-hull fittings, hoses, or drain plugs. Confirm that the transom drain plug is securely installed, all deck drains and scuppers are clear, and that the bilge pump automatically activates when water collects.
Uncontrolled water ingress is a dangerous situation. A missing drain plug can sink a boat at the dock or the ramp. Happens all of the time. A failed bilge pump leaves the captain without the ability to remove water in rough seas or rainstorms.
Turn the wheel lock to lock before launch to confirm it moves smoothly and sounds normal. Throttle and shift controls should move freely without binding. The engine should engage gears quietly and predictably during warmup.
Loss of steering or control is a high-risk failure. Even partial binding can compromise the captain’s ability to maneuver in tight spaces or avoid debris or other boats.
Every boat should carry the legally required safety equipment:
Make sure life jackets are readily accessible, not buried under towels, clothes, and water toys. Verify the expiration dates on all of your flares. You should also carry a first-aid kit, an anchor with sufficient rode, basic tools, and an emergency paddle on board.
Sudden bad weather, mechanical failures, unexpected waves, or medical issues require immediate access to reliable safety gear. In an emergency, misplaced or expired equipment can delay a response or violate maritime safety laws.
Your pre-launch basics should include a walk around the hull to inspect it for cracks, loose hardware, or trailering damage. Check the prop for dings or fishing line around the shaft. At the ramp, confirm the bow eye, winch strap, safety chain, transom tie-downs, and engine support block are properly removed or secured as needed.
Even small cracks can expand under wave impacts, and damaged props reduce performance, increase fuel burn, and strain the engine. Incorrect ramp-prep—perhaps leaving a transom strap attached—can cause damage, delay your launch, or create unsafe conditions around the trailer.
