Maintaining a boat can feel like a second job, especially when it comes to protecting the hull from the elements. UV exposure, oxidation, and marine growth are among the challenges boaters face when trying to keep the family boat looking its best through hull protection.
While there are plenty of one-stop marine products that promise to do it all, the claims don’t always hold up. Cut through the shine to find the waxes, polishes, and barrier coats that deliver lasting hull protection.
Determining a maintenance schedule and picking the right hull protection depends on a variety of factors. A boat that stays in the water will require far different maintenance versus one that is kept in a storage facility.
Regardless of where a boat lives, the hull finish still needs protection, said Eric Spath, founder of Top Polish and Shine in Canada.
“It’s more important to do it right and to consistently reapply than to sit around and worry whether this product offers more protection,” Spath said.
When it comes to hull protection, boaters should think in terms of above and below the waterline, Spath said. Above, the hull faces sun, scuffs, and everyday grime. Below, the constant exposure to water can lead to algae growth. Both need care, but each calls for the right products for the conditions.
A boat never looks better than after being waxed and polished. But that peak protection can break down quickly in sun and saltwater.
Polish corrects surface-level problems such as oxidation, micro-scratches, and haze but does not offer long-term protection. You have to apply a coat of wax or sealant after you polish the hull. While wax helps with water spots and UV exposure, it doesn’t prevent oxidation.
Do you own a trailerable boat and use it in freshwater? Stick with products formulated for that environment, such as Meguiar’s, Star brite and 3M Marine. Does your boat stay on a lift or in the water? You need to wash and wax it more frequently. Spath said boaters should think beyond traditional wax.
Ceramic coatings offer better protection than waxes but are double the cost. The tradeoff is less maintenance, and a coating that lasts one to three years instead of months. Spath applied ceramic coating to a new Yamaha wakeboard boat for a client, who appreciated it when it came time to winterize.
“The marina traditionally acid washes the boat out of freshwater,” Spath said. “All they have to do is use soap and a brush and it all comes off, because growth isn’t getting into the gelcoat.”
Ceramic coatings use advanced polymers that cure into a hard, protective layer. While ceramic coatings are ideal for trailered boats, they may not be worth it for boats in the water year-round that are regularly maintained.
“They’re still going to have to scrub the bottom of your boat, even if it’s ceramic coated,” Spath said.
While there are DIY products from Boat Bling and 3M on the market, Spath uses Gtechniq Marine and recommends you hire a professional. Weather conditions and how well the product is applied can impact the durability of the finish.
A barrier coat helps protect the hull of boats that stay in the water full time. Owners have a few options to choose from, none of which are particularly attractive. Barrier coats are often applied to sailboats and workboats, vessels that are impractical to haul out.
The latest trend is to use PPF, a clear polyurethane film that you apply to the hull. Think of it as luxury vinyl that stops growth. PPF is expensive and requires professional installation. And on the downside, you can damage the film itself pretty easily by bumping or scraping against a dock. Any repairs will easily show, Spath said.
“I don’t really see it in the boating world as being practical,” said Spath of PPF, which was developed by the automotive industry. “If somebody tells me they never hit a dock, it’s like hearing a boater say they’ve boated their whole life and never replaced a prop.”
The coating can last five to 10 years, but excessive sun exposure and saltwater can shorten its service life.
Most boaters are familiar with antifouling paint, which stands out. Ideal for boats that stay in saltwater slips and warm brackish waters, antifouling paint contains copper-based biocides to prevent marine growth.
Manufacturers such as Interlux and Pettit offer antifouling paints in various colors beyond standard black. Owners typically use it on older boats. Spath doesn’t like antifouling paint because of environmental issues, noting that appliers must use tarps to collect paint chips before recoating. He suggests boaters invest in a lift or increase maintenance, but that’s not always practical.
Boat owners who aren’t sure what products to use can consult the owner’s manual or check with the manufacturer. If the boatbuilder is no longer in business, boating forums can help, but the advice isn’t always dependable. Fellow dock mates can provide advice, too.
A product’s label is the best source of information, and it should be for marine use. It’s worth noting that no single product will be the perfect solution.
“You may have to experiment until you find one that works,” Spath said. “Then stick with it.”
