Lookout EcoCruise Brings Fuel Savings to Your Helm Display

Recreational boat owners have a new tool to help them maximize fuel efficiency and lower their fuel costs. Lookout, the maker of an at-the-helm AI-enhanced safety system, announced a new feature called EcoCruise. It gives boaters something they can use to minimize their trips to the fuel dock: a clear, visual target for where to run their throttle.

“Every boater feels the pain at the fuel dock right now,” said David Rose, CEO of Lookout. “EcoCruise doesn’t ask them to give up performance or stay off plane. It just shows them the sweet spot, the speed at which their specific boat burns the least fuel per mile. And it coaches them toward it in real time.”

Rose added that the owner of a typical 35-foot powerboat could save more than $3,700 on fuel over the course of a season. Every planing hull has a narrow efficiency sweet spot. EcoCruise will help boat owners find theirs.

Lookout EcoCruise isn’t just a fuel meter, according to the company. It provides a subtle behavioral cue when boaters glance at it, similar to Ford’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide in cars. Research says these ambient devices, these onboard eco-driving coaches, work. An analysis of 17 studies showed an average 6.6 percent improvement in fuel economy with real-time feedback displays. Lookout brings that philosophy and the at-a-glance information that matters to helm design.

EcoCruise is available as a new standard feature in Lookout. Current owners received their free over-the-air update during the recent rollout.
