What Are the Differences Between Superyachts and Megayachts?

You see the terms “superyacht” and “megayacht” used in magazines and on websites, but what do they really mean? They seem to be the same and are often used interchangeably; however, they are different. It’s like a high-end hotel versus a high-end resort. Both are big. One is bigger. And both are luxurious. So what are the differences between superyachts and megayachts?

Superyachts are smaller than megayachts but still are a whopping 100 feet to 160 feet in length. Some definitions for superyachts go down to 80 feet. That’s way bigger than most boats—even yachts—on the market. Megayachts, however, are huge. They begin at 160 feet in length and stretch to beyond 500 feet, so even the smallest megayacht is impressive. They are a lot of yacht. You can spot the differences in other ways, too.

Superyachts

Superyachts are large and lavish, with most of the amenities of a megayacht, but to a lesser extent. They have multiple decks that usually feature pools, jacuzzis, bars, and lounging areas for relaxation. However, these areas are smaller than on a megayacht.

Superyachts can easily accommodate 10 to 12 guests and about six to 15 crewmembers. There is much to do on these yachts, especially since they have water toys such as personal watercraft, paddle boats, snorkeling and/or SCUBA equipment, or even tender boats.

They have five to six luxurious and spacious staterooms with the best high-end materials. You can expect sophistication in the décor and modern technology.

You’ll find unique rooms, depending on the owner’s preferences. Some have cinema rooms with plush seating, where you can watch movies theater-style. Others have decent-sized gyms and small wellness centers where you can relax. At dinner, your food will be prepared by a highly skilled chef in a more intimate setting.

Even though they’re smaller, these yachts are great because they’re less expensive than a megayacht—that’s, of course, relatively speaking—and more intimate without sacrificing a luxurious experience at sea.

Megayachts

If you’ve ever looked at a vessel and wondered what the owner does for a living, chances are you were looking at a megayacht. These are aimed at the ultra-wealthy, with almost everything you could imagine on board. And even then some.

Helipads and submarines? Check. Infinity pools and nightclubs? Check. Waterfalls and swim-up bars? Double check.

Megayachts are enormous. They accommodate 20 to 36 guests and 25 to 50 crew, or more. They have 10 to 15 guest rooms, some of which include multi-level suites with private balconies, personal lounges, and offices. The primary suite? Often, it occupies an entire deck and has a private terrace, a pool, and/or a jacuzzi.

Some megayachts include private medical suites. Many incorporate high-end surveillance systems that include military-grade technology such as missile detection or anti-drone capabilities.

A never-ending list of over-the-top luxuries makes these yachts truly extravagant. Megayacht costs run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, but you can count on a luxurious experience unlike anything you’ve ever felt.

Biggest Megayachts

As time passes, megayachts will only get bigger and incorporate more modern designs and features. The most enormous mega yachts range from 475 feet to 600 feet. The largest is Somnio at 728 feet. The 534-foot Eclipse is another megayacht worth noting. Its owner wanted space for multiple helicopters. On the main deck is one of the largest megayacht pools at 49 feet long.

It has 18 guest cabins served by 100 crew. It also includes a huge gym and spa area, a massage room, a beauty salon, a sauna, a shower area, and a plunge pool. It’s a modern marvel.

At 590 feet, megayacht Azzam is one of the world’s largest private yachts. It’s interesting because, despite its size, it can reach speeds of more than 30 knots. It accommodates 36 guests and 80 crew while being one of the world’s fastest megayachts. Guests can enjoy a golf training room, an onboard gym, and a pool.

Megayachts will get bigger as engineers continue to push the boundaries of technology and design. Superyachts will continue to get more lavish and technologically advanced and provide more intimate—compared to megayachts—and relaxing experiences for guests. Either way, you can count on these yachts to be unfathomably luxurious.
